THE GREAT TURNIP STORY OF 2003

Epic moment of a mother’s unconditional love. The KOF is 33. KK is 4. Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Father-Daughter bonding. Birdseye view of the floats.

It’s 8am kinda-early. It’s cold/windy.  Cell rings. Wait, back-it-up context, it’s my first Thanksgiving that my mom & I will not be in the same location. More tragic is the reality that this will also be my first Thanksgiving without mom’s magical turnips (copious amounts of bacon, the kelly-gold butter IYKYK, bacon fat & black pepper = magical). Oh yeah, cell rings, it’s Annie Ruaney from Granlahanny! She wants to give me a hug for Turkey Day! She drove to the city. WTF, who dos that! She is on Park Ave. She can’t make it to Macy’s.

KK hangs with new friends. I hustle East. Such an Annie move. But I am more worried about getting back to KK. I was pretty swift decades ago. Shut-up, lol! Annie comes into frame-view. What is she holding, you ask? Middle median Park Ave NYC…yelling my name Brian-ine, IYKYK, with glee….with arms wide open…..you didn’t guess it…..lmfao….2 of the largest Ziploc bags, filled to the brim, still piping hot…..MAGICAL TURNIPS! She had an effin spoon too, for my walk back! That is who Anne Ruane Curley is/will always be. My best-friend-hero! We hugged. We cried. We hugged some more. She stayed up all-night makin’ the magic. Beyond selfless. Truest form of unconditional love to ensure I would never miss the magic in life. 55 Thanksgivings to date. The magical turnips have always been present. Annie made sure ongoing. LIVING THE DREAM in action. HUGGIN’ LIFE in action. Thanks for smiling inside & out right now!
